Bamboo fly rods and Alaska aren't often mentioned
together, yet its an excellent place to design, make
and test bamboo rods. From high tundra dry fly fishing for tiny, acrobatic
grayling to sight fishing sleek, multi-colored rainbow trout to playing
massive salmon in fast moving rivers of deep glacial green, nearly the full
scope of freshwater fishing - and even some saltwater - are never far away. Rod tapers, construction
methods, materials and components are tested and re-tested in every possible
circumstance and condition in order to craft the finest bamboo rods
available. I make each bamboo rod here in my shop in Alaska from beginning to end from choice Tonkin cane, select Portuguese cork, various exotic and local woods, top grade nickel silver, the finest gauge silk thread, and quality marine-grade varnishes. Culms are hand split, hand planed and milled to the tightest tolerances then assembled using time-tested adhesives, which results in blanks and rods that have no visible seams or glue lines and are straight, durable and responsive. Guide wraps are smooth, low profile and tight, ferrule fit is buttery, and grips are individually custom shaped for optimal fit and comfort. Varnish coating is functionally thin, glossy and perfectly smooth. Rods that are hollow built are hollowed well into the tips when possible for optimal weight and action optimization. As a full-time bamboo rod maker, I enjoy making rods that I can tailor to the person that will be fishing them rather than making one standard aesthetic or color scheme, or limiting the taper choices to those that I may like best. Of course, I have my personal favorites that I'm always happy to recommend, but in the end the rod is to be yours, not mine. My goal is to make a custom bamboo fly rod that will perfectly suit your fishing, character and taste, will last through a lifetime of use and, with any luck, will be an heirloom for future generations.
